Severe trauma affects all structures of the self – one’s image of the body; the internalized images of others; and one’s values and ideals – and leads to a sense that self-coherence and self-continuity are invaded, assaulted and systematically broken down. Traumatic events overwhelm the ordinary human adaptations to life and generally involve threats to life or bodily integrity, or a close personal encounter with violence and death, and they confront human beings with the extremities of helplessness and terror, and evoke the response of catastrophe.

Dr. Vito Zepinic has an extensive clinical experience in psychological medicine specializing in CBT and Dynamic Therapy in the assessment and treatment of the mental health problems, in particular PTSD and related disorders. He has over 20 years of academic experience as a professor/lecturer, mentor and clinical supervisor in psychiatry and psychological medicine.

A series of diazonium (perfluoroalkyl) benzenesulfonyimide (PFSI) zwitterionic monomers have been synthesized from perfluoro-3, 6-dioxa-4-methyl-7-octene-sulfonyl fluoride (Nafion®), and perfluoro-3-oxa-4-pentenesulfonyl fluoride (POPF) monomers for the first time. With trifluorovinyl ether and diazonium precursors, the partially-fluorinated diazonium monomers can be further polymerized and will provide chemically bonding with carbon electrode in Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cells. A systematic study of the synthesis and characterization of these diazonium PFSI monomers has been conducted. The chemical properties and thermal stability of these monomers have been measured and will be discussed in the seminar.

This study provided serial attempts to uncover strategies for optimal microbial fuel cell (MFC)-assisted treatment of textile dye-bearing wastewater. Although MFC technology is still not economically-viable for practicability, using MFCs as operation strategy is still promising for pollutant bioremediation. According to redox characteristics of dye pollutant(s), indigenous dye-decolorizing bacteria were first isolated for textile dye-decontamination with environmental friendliness. Next, decolorized metabolites (DM) below threshold toxicity potency were applied to stimulate electron-transfer (ET) characteristics for color removal due to promising electron-shuttling capabilities. In addition, model intermediate(s) (e.g., amino and hydroxyl substituent(s)-containing chemicals) were also confirmed to act as electron shuttles (ESs) to maximize treatment efficiencies of MFCs. Moreover, quantitative assessment of simultaneous bioelectricity generation and dye decolorization (SBG&DD) via MFCs indicated that ET capabilities of SBG&DD could be augmented more than 40-70% for applicable biodegradation. In addition, MFC-aided bioremediation was also promising to treat dyes-laden saline wastewater due to autocatalysis of DM. From reaction engineering perspective, batch mode of operation (HRT->∞) with recycle(s) of DM was more favorable for promising industrial practicability for wastewater decolorization.

2016 International Conference on Education and Innovation

    Apr. 23-24, 2016

This speech consists of two parts. The first part is to review the opportunities and challenges of Chinese language teaching in the United States. Contrary to the incredible popularity of Chinese learning, the problem of lacking qualified Chinese teachers is becoming more salient. There is an urgent need in providing professional trainings to current and prospective Chinese teachers to suffice the need of Chinese learning. STARTALK, one of the initiative programs by NSLI (National Security Language Initiative), is dedicated to empowering the current and perspective teachers with expertise in language teaching. The second part is to share with the audience a case study of four international teacher educators collaborating to teach a STARTALK institute, through which to discuss how teacher educators negotiated their identities and grew from the collaboration. This case study was set in the context of a two-week STARTALK Chinese language teachers workshop hosted at the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota. This workshop featured a unique and innovative collaboration among four instructors, one from the U.S., one from Austria, one from Taiwan and one from China. In addition to different ethnic and academic backgrounds, they brought various personalities and connections with Chinese language teacher training. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the learning opportunities available for the four instructors and to explore what they learned and how they learned from collaboration throughout the workshop. Data sources included reflective journals, instructor’s meeting minutes, videos of instruction and in-depth interviews. The findings illuminated the importance of collaboration among teacher educators and the nonlinear nature of learning, in addition to shedding light on a new perspective to examine the effectiveness of teacher training programs.
